I got this LED as a backup since my Samsung EX1920x LED was acting up and had to be sent back for warranty service. This monitor is made in China while my Samsung was made in Malaysia. Now I have been told the build quality of the Malaysia products are usually better than those of Chinese origin but comparing the two I would say that the Viewsonic has a better finish and build quality. It is also much sturdier than the EX1920x. On first turning it on I noticed that the back light was very even with little to no bleed which is nice. It has more viewable real estate than the average 1366x768 monitor by boasting a 18.5inch display panel housed in its piano black casing. The colors are reasonably accurate with the exception of a new drawbacks which I have listed in the problems section. The contrast is acceptable and unless your expectations are extremely high, but then again this is a value series monitor (designated by the 'VA') positioned for the average user. The discerning customer would be more happier going with Viewsonic's VX line. The DVI is an nice addition as a good number of value monitors today are shipped with D-Sub only. Viewsonic has the color temperature set to 6500K by default while 7500K, 9500K and sRBG are also offered as selectable options. To me it seems like 6500K is the actual sweet spot while 9500K is too blueish and sRGB removes contrast and brightness control from the user. The user controls are relatively easy to operate as long as you make a conscious effort to not mix up the buttons. For the money this is a solid monitor but if you can afford it there are much higher performance displays on offer.
Problems: Making a direct comparison with the Samsung EX1920x which I just returned due to a technical issue, this monitor is missing the wow factor that the Samsung offered. For example I just unboxed the EX1920 and started using it as I felt by default the color, brightness and temperature were perfect. With the Viewsonic I had to play around with it a bit to get the display to a satisfactory picture. Yet I still feel the color temperature is either too warm and bright using the preset color templates; bear in mind that this would be a subjective area more influenced by personal taste. Also note that the sRGB color temperature setting tends to make the display too dim when run on DVI and the lack of user adjustable contrast and brightness under this setting makes it not possible to change anything . My old VA1716w at work does sRGB just fine with no dimming, I wish this one did the same. Leaving sRGB aside all other settings allow custom brightness and contrast to be set by user. It's not perfect but I think it has lots of merits as mentioned above and considering the pluses and minuses of both the VA1938w and Samsung EX1920x its a close call.
